SIPITANG: The Student Volunteer Mission programme organised by Yayasan Sukarelawan Siswa (YSS) is capable of producing human capital that are more sensitive towards the lives of the people around them.

Sabah Umno Youth chief Yamani Hafez Musa said the programme, which began on July 8, involving the interior of Beaufort, Sipitang and Nabawan, was in line with the aspiration of the National Transformation 2050 (TN50), to produce leadership among today’s youth who excel academically and empathise with the people.

“This issue is something that we can translate, work on at the beginning (young people), especially in the context of conducting a volunteering programme,” he told Bernama when met after closing the International Students Volunteer Mission held at Kampung Solob on Friday.

A total of 89 students from public and private institutions of higher learning participated in the mission carried out via national blue ocean strategy with the involvement of government departments and agencies, students from Singapore, Indonesia and Sudan as well as Malaysians studying in the United Kingdom.

YSS board member Wan Ahmad Hazman Wan Daud said the foundation had always been working with selected villages to learn about the needs of the residents and the appropriate activities that could be conducted with the volunteers.

He also said such programme was among efforts taken to support the government’s move towards understanding and helping the people in remote areas.

During the event, one of the villagers Marlina Mutang, 30, had difficulty holding back her tears when she saw the volunteers packing their belongings. Bernama
