MIRI: Sarawak has introduced tuna satay, as part of the government’s effort to develop the downstream fisheries industry.

Sarawak Marine Fisheries Department, (Promotion unit) assistant officer Roslan Tili said the department is introducing this new product to Sarawakians after it was started in Labuan last year.

“Tuna satay is rich in Omega 3, vitamin A and minerals and food lovers will love this new blend as it is low in cholesterol, “Roslan said when promoting the tuna satay at Kampung Kuala Sibuti near here yesterday.

Present was Sarawak Marine Fisheries Department Region 3 head Buniamin Kiprawi.

According to Roslan, tuna satay is an alternative for beef, chicken, rabbit and kambing satay which is well liked by the local community in Sarawak.

He said the tuna-based satay, which has penetrated the local market in Labuan, since August last year, will be available in Miri in three months time.

“The department has identified a supplier here in Miri and currently we are training them on how to prepare and turn tuna fish into satay product.

“The department will provide support services for the supplier as we believe that the fisheries sector can offer added value to our economy, “he disclosed.

Roslan said the idea to create satay from tuna fillet was mooted by the department since tuna fish are also found in Mukah apart from Labuan.

He said, the department has identified the fishing community in Mukah to stock the fish to cater for the tuna satay supplier in Miri whose factory is located along the Pujut-Airport bypass Industrial Zone.
