KOTA KINABALU: A man was fined RM6,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday, in default, six months in jail for reckless driving.

Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun imposed the fine on Samuel Chong Tsen Hiung who pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The indictment provides for a maximum fine of RM10,000 and also liable to a jail term of up to 12 months.

He committed the offence at Jalan Tuaran, Taman Antarabangsa here at 6.30am on June 21, 2014.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Hanif Mamyudi told the court that the accused was driving from Likas to Kota Kinabalu and had lost control of the wheel.

He said the accused was reckless and failed to control the car which skidded on a road divider and hit a lamp post.

Earlier, counsel George Aludah, who represented the accused, requested for a lenient sentence on the grounds that the incident happened on a rainy day.

He added that his client was sending workers to Jalan Tuaran.

The magistrate also ordered Samuel’s driving licence to be endorsed with his conviction.

In a separate case, three men, including a motorcyclist, were fined RM1,200, in default, two days’ jail each, for driving their vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

Lau Chen Soong, David Ng Shiaw Yen and Charles Labo Ukab admitted to committing the offence in the KK area on March 20, June 21 and January 8, respectively.

Charles was also fined another RM800 for riding his motorcycle without a licence and insurance coverage.
