Embrace personal safety as a way of life — Pairin
TAMBUNAN: Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Infrastructure Development, Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan yesterday urged young children to embrace personal safety as a way of life in order to avoid the risks of accidents and untoward circumstances.
Pairin was speaking at the launch of a safety campaign which was sponsored by Repsol Oil & Gas Malaysia Limited which was participated by 500 schoolchildren from 10 schools in the Tambunan district here.
He commended Repsol for initiating and continuing the programme which the oil and gas company started in 2013 in Sabah.
“It is a timely initiative which gives an early awareness to all young schoolchildren on the importance of embracing the importance of personal safety at all times,” he remarked.
Pairin also asked the schools to organize regular trainings on safety in order to refresh the operating procedures as well as to remind the young schoolchildren on the safety messages.
Repsol’s Kinabalu Asset Director, Shreeram M. Lom, who also spoke at the ceremony, said that safety came first before everything else in Repsol’s business operations.
He explained that this personal safety programme was initiated as a way of sharing safety messages among the targeted community, which are young schoolchildren.
So far, the programme had touched the lives of over 7,500 schoolchildren from several districts in Sabah and Labuan.
Repsol produced a special interactive video to share situations and scenarios in highlighting key safety messages as part of the hands-on learning experience by the participants who also listened to talks from the Police and Fire and Rescue Service Department as well as trying their hands using fire extinguishers at the fire-fighting demonstration by firemen.
Co-organising chairperson, Haison Jahudin, who is also Tambunan District Education Officer, expressed his deep appreciation to Repsol for giving Tambunan schoolchildren the opportunity to benefit from the programme.
He was happy with the allround support from the schools and at the same time, urged the participants to share the safety messages with their parents, siblings and friends at school who did not have the opportunity to participate.
