Three former staff of Education Dept named Tokoh Guru 2017
KENINGAU: Three former Education Department staff here were selected to receive Tokoh Guru 2017 Award in conjunction with the district level Teachers’ Day and Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration held at SJKC Yuk Yin hall here yesterday.
All three are former Keningau and Tambunan District Education officer Haji Kaipin Haji Rusmin, former Keningau District Education Office Excellent officer Delsum Abdullah and former teacher Gua Ah Siew.
Meanwhile, Sirhajwan Idek from Keningau Vocational College was chosen as Teacher Icon.
The ceremony was officiated by Deputy Chief Minister and Infrastructure Development Minister, Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan hereafter presenting Tokoh Guru and Teacher Icon awards.
In his speech, he said that the current focus of the government was to improve the quality of education by emphasizing self-development and high level thinking in teaching and learning in schools.
He said in an effort to produce human capital in line with the aspirations of the National Education Philosophy, the potential of children to be developed includes developing physical qualities that are closely related to the development of the mind.
According to him, a healthy body guarantees the development of intelligent minds through sporting activities as a major component of the children’s learning process.
“Likewise, the personality and behavioral aspects of the children need to be taken care of from home so that we can avoid disciplinary misconduct and reduce social problems in society.
“We can see that curriculum and co-curriculum activities complement the efforts to develop the potential of children so that they have the ability to create something new and think outside of the box.
“Their potential should not be judged on the basis of achievement in purely examinations but also holistically in terms of creativity and involvement in various areas of knowledge and this way we will surely produce competent human beings capable of competing at the world stage,” Pairin said.
Pairin said the whole system of education required the dedication and commitment of teachers and school leaders to implement any change that would bring good results.
He said real change would not have taken place without seriously considering the needs of teachers and school leaders as well as finding ways to nurture and maintain such excellence.
According to him, existing teachers and school leaders should not only be provided with more resources in the form of professional support and development but also better career paths, and even the profession of teaching will also be a professional, dynamic and satisfying profession to attract them the best to maintain and remain in the national education system.
“In view of this, teachers’ quality improvement has become an important agenda in transforming the education of the nation and on behalf of the government, represented by the Ministry of Education, continue to be committed to maintaining the existing policy of strengthening the teaching profession in Malaysia to make it more attractive, more satisfying and more prestigious.
“Wave 1PPPM 2013-2025 has been supporting teachers to improve quality through the Continuing Professionalism Development Program (PPB) and the efforts to strengthen teachers’ quality continue in Wave 2 and Wave 3 PPPM 20132025.
He said in order to realize this desire through the Ministry of Education, the government had optimized the implementation of PPB to give impact on the improvement of teachers’ quality.
Pairin said in conjunction with the Teachers’ Day it was a great blessing to the teachers to successfully face the challenges with a strong desire to lift the nation’s education system to a level that is proud and admired by the outside world.
Also present at the event were Keningau Education Department senior officer Masly Wahip, the Malaysian Sekolah Penyayang Advisor Datuk Yap Yun Fook, Chairman of SJKC Yuk Yin Management Board Kapitan Liew Ket Lim, Tambunan District Education Officer Haison Jahudin, Nabawan District Education Officer Saibeh Saini, Tenom District Education officer representative Mohd Johan Abdullah, principals, headmasters and teachers.
