‘Angels Wear White’ to represent China in upcoming Venice Film Fest

-

BEIJING: Director Vivian Qu’s ‘Jia Nian Hua’ or ‘Angels Wear White’ will represent China in the 74th edition of the Venice Film Festival this year, which unveiled its lineup Thursday.

‘Jia Nian Hua’ is a China-France coproduction starring Wen Qi, Zhou Meijun and Shi Ke, among others.

Other notable contenders and world premieres include Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Mother!’ starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem; George Clooney’s ‘Suburbicon’ with Matt Damon and Julianne Moore; ‘The Shape of Water’ by Guillermo del Toro and ‘Human Flow’, a Germany US co-production of a documentary on the refugee crisis.

The Venice Film Festival was founded in 1932, making it the oldest film festival in the world.

However, that has not stopped the event from incorporating the latest technology.

Event organisers have announced that a special competition will be set up this year for VR films, which has attracted five Chinese entries, including ‘The Dream Collector’ and ‘Free Whale’.

Jane Fonda and Robert Redford will showcase their new collaboration ‘Our Souls at Night’, in addition to receiving Lifetime Achievement Awards.

American actress Annette Bening will head the jury.

The Venice Film Festival is widely seen as a major launch pad for Oscar contenders. The event will take place in the Italian city from Aug 30 to Sept 9.
