Keningau and Labuan villages win Premier Rural Village Award
KOTA KINABALU: Kampung Merampong from Keningau and Kampung Layang-Layangan from the Labuan Federal Territory took top honours of the Premier Rural Village Award or Anugerah Desa Perdana 2017 yesterday.
Both villages will now be representing Sabah and Labuan respectively, for the national category where both will compete with other villages that have won at their respective states, nationwide.
Both Kampung Merampong and Kampung Layang-Layangan won RM12,000, which was the main prize under the State level category.
Meanwhile, the second prize and third prizes under the State category for Sabah went to Kampung Sugiang Tengah, Tenom and Kampung Segangan, Lahad Datu respectively.
Kampung Sugiang Tengah won RM10,000 while Kampung Segangan received RM8,000.
From the Federal Territory of Labuan, the second prize went to Kampung Sungai Miri, which also won RM10,000, and the third prize went to Kampung Lubok Temiang which took home RM8,000.
The Premier Rural Village Award or Anugerah Desa Perdana is an initiative under the Rural Transformation Programme of the Village Development and Safety Committee.
The programme involves a competition which is carried out to encourage community empowerment among the villagers and serves also as training for the leaders at the grassroots level to improve their leadership skills.
A total of 582 villages competed at the district level, 159 villages at the state level and 23 villages at the national level, which will be held on August 22.
