Liquor theft accused claims trial
KOTA KINABALU: A 57year-old man claimed trial at the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday to stealing a bottle of liquor at a hypermarket.
Vun Chau Lin, who was brought before senior assistant registrar Herlina Muse, was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and also liable to a fine, upon conviction.
He was alleged to have stolen a bottle of “Singleton 12 years Single Malt 700m” worth RM390 per bottle, at the Giant Hypermarket, City Mall here at 3.15pm on July 28.
Vun, who was represented by a lawyer, prayed for a lenient bail while prosecuting officer Inspector Rasydan Jasni offered a bail of RM5,000 with two local sureties and to report to the police station twice a month.
The court fixed August 29 this year for pre-trial case management and released the accused on RM2,000 bail with two local sureties, pending disposal of the case.
Meanwhile, a 45-year-old man claimed trial at the Sessions Court to possessing 31.75 grams of syabu.
Jaffri Jamal, who appeared before judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim, was charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39A (2) of the same Act.
The indictment provides for life imprisonment or a jail term of not less than five years and whipping of not less than 10 strokes, upon conviction.
He was alleged to have possessed the drugs at the carpark area of CKS Supermarket in Kinarut, Papar at 10.30pm on March 27.
The judge fixed August 15 this year for pre-trial case management while the accused, who was not repesented, to be further detained in custody, pending disposal of the case.
