Verify before sharing information on social media – Ku Nan
KUALA LUMPUR: Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor yesterday expressed the need for the people to apply the principle of “tabayyun when obtaining information on the social media, which is to check and verify it before accepting it as true, and then to share it with others.
Currently, he said a lot of information was shared by social media users to an extent that it became viral, but later on, only to find the information was false and confusing.
“These false news can also undermine security of the public and the country. Checking and verifying information is important before distributing it, make sure it is from a reliable source. Otherwise, do not share (the information).
“Spreading false and libelous news is easy, but when we realise the mistake later one, it is difficult for us to detect the source, how far it has spread and how to stop it, he said in his speech when opening the “Seminar Program #Negaraku: Seminar Media Sosial 2017 here yesterday.
The text of Tengku Adnan’s speech was read by his political secretary, Datuk Mohd Rafi Alli Hassan.
The one-day seminar was organised by the Kuala Lumpur Information Department and the Communications and Multimedia Commission, with the cooperation of the Communications and Multimedia MInistry’s Coordinating Committee.
It was aimed at producing a first class digital generation that practices safe, cautious and responsible usage of the Internet.
Meanwhile, Tengku Adnan also advised parents to monitor the use of the social media by their children to avoid them from accessing pornographic websites or becoming victims of pedophiles. - Bernama
