Unite, value peace and prosperity of today

-

MELAKA: Experience is the mother of wisdom. For grocer Baharin Awaludin, 69, the adage rings true.

The experience of the former Royal Malay Regiment (RAMD) sergeant in witnessing the difficulties faced by the people during the Communist insurgency period makes him feel thankful that daily necessities are now easily obtained.

Every day when he opens his grocery store in Kampung Tun Abdul Razak, Bukit Katil, here, he is reminded of these hardships, but he fears that the present generation who are lost in luxuries of today have forgotten the sacrifices made by the earlier generation in securing peace for the country.

“The generation of today do not have to leave their wife and children for months, bearing arms in the thick jungle. They only need to continue to be united and never forget the good deeds of the previous generation,” said Baharin who joined the army at the age of 23.

He is saddened by the youth of today who are quick to believe slanderous news on the government and forget its deeds towards them.

“Think properly before taking in such news. If the claims that our government is bad or evil are true, then we would not be able to enjoy the peace and prosperity of today,” Baharin added.

As proof, according to a statement from the Melaka Police Contingent, the crime rate in the country has shown a decrease of 6.35 percent or by 1,502 cases until June this year, compared to 1,604 last year.

According to the statement, the drop in crime rate was due to the joint efforts of the government and the people with the police in combatting crime and addressing issues related to the national security. - Bernama
