Archers take aim at Series 1 Sabah Archery Carnival

KOTA KINABALU: Muhd Syauqi Azmi, Eugenius Lo, Sharon Chung and Md Nabilariff­in Sadude emerged as the tournament’s top brass at the Series 1 Sabah Archery Carnival recently.

The tournament, which was held at the archery range in Likas last weekend, saw Syauqi, Eugenius, Sharon and Nabilariff­in bag four gold medals each to emerge as the biggest winners in the multicateg­ory competitio­n.

The tournament, which was jointly organised for the first time by the Sabah Archery Associatio­n, Sabah Sports Council and Sabah Education Department, featured men’s and women’s under-20, boys and girls 13-15 and boys and girls under-12.

Syauqi, from Papar, won four gold medals in the men’s u-20 recurve, while compound archer Eugenius from Kota Kinabalu also won his four gold medals in the men’s u-20.

Sharon and Nabilariff­in, who were both from Tawau, shined in the under-12 recurve. They also won four gold medals each.

Keningau’s archers also fared well. Noryfasiki­n Bilau and Caroline Fread both seized three gold medals each in the women’s u-20 compound and recurve events, respective­ly.

Three other archers won two gold medals each, among them Muhd Syafiq Busthamin and Mohd Haikal Fauzi. Both of them hail from Tawau and competed in the boys 13-15 recurve.

Another archer was Ekaputri Aqeela Ali from Kota Kinabalu. She competed in the girls 13-15 recurve and also won two gold medals.

Other gold medal winners include Clementina Banadus (Malaysia Sports School Sabah), Liow Yi Jun (Sandakan), Nur Soutun Naqibah Abd Aziz (Kota Kinabalu) and Sandra Joan Albert (Keningau).

Meanwhile, Sabah Archery Associatio­n deputy presidentc­um-organising chairman Dzulkarnai­n Dzulkifli said a total of 106 junior archers from 10 districts competed in the event.

“Thanks to all the participat­ion of our young archers from Kota Kinabalu, Papar, Ranau, Keningau, Sipitang, Lahad Datu, Tawau and Sandakan, we are able to unearth some new talents who would later be absorbed into our developmen­t programme.

“And with such tournament­s like this, it is hoped that we can promote early interest in archery so that more youngsters would take up the sport and that we would one day make Sabah a power house in the country,” he said.
