Chung Hwa Likas are junior badminton champs
KOTA KINABALU: Team SJK (C) Chung Hwa, Likas emerged as champions in the Soo Shau Kiong Cup 6th Kung Shan Junior Badminton Championships that ended at the Kota Kinabalu High School badminton hall here recently.
The school bagged three out of eight titles in the championship which attracted over 160 young shuttlers from 12 primary schools within Sabah’s West Coast.
Datu Anif Isaac delivered the first title for Chung Hwa Likas when he defeated Ixion Chua Jeng Sim of SJK Chung Hwa, Kota Kinabalu 21-5, 21-9 in the Boys’ Under-10 Singles.
Cheryl Anis Natasha added the Girls’ Under-11 Singles title for Chung Hwa Likas after her 21-7, 21-13 final over Sharleen Mercy Paul from SJK Chin Sin, Tuaran.
Jason Lau Shi Xian won the third title for Chung Hwa Likas when he edged Bryan Yong Jun Cong from SK Anglo Chinese Kota Kinabalu 21-7, 21-13 in the Boys’ Under-12 Singles.
The rest of the titles saw Melody Chew Shi Qing from SK Anglo Chinese Kota Kinabalu winning the Girls’ Under-10 Singles beating Eyva Easthervyna of SJK Chung Hwa, Tamparuli 21-8, 21-9.
Norman Ngu Chak Boon from SJK Chung Hwa KK defeated schoolmate Noel Vun Khai En 21-6, 21-7 for the Boys’ Under-11 Singles title.
In the Boys’ Under-11 Doubles, the winners were Bryan Messi Terence/Elton Lu Thin Qiun of SJK Chin Sin after beating Sean Aidan/Wayne Liew Yong Guan of Chung Hwa, Likas 21-3, 21-1.
Lam Xuan Yuen from SJK Shan Tao defeated Constance Anna Jirom Domy of SJK Yue Min Penampang 21-14, 21-16 to lift the Girls’ Under-12 Singles title.
As for the Boys’ Under-12 Doubles, Mohd Afizam/Syahrel Nizam of SJK Lok Yuk Menggatal claimed a 21-14, 21-10 win over Arther Wong Kui Zan/ Wong Chua Sean of SK Anglo Chinese.
The other participating schools were SJK Chung Hwa Kota Belud, SJK Lok Yuk Likas, SJK St James Likas and SK Gantisan Sepanggar Tuaran.
Meanwhile, organising chairman of Kung Shan Alumni Association Chua Kok Hian expressed thanks to the main sponsor Soo Shau Kiong and Li Su Fook for their kind generosity that enabled the tournament to be run successfully.
Chua also extended appreciation to Anthony C. Linggian for heading the technical team, and all the players, school teachers and coaches, parents and spectators who took part during the whole tournament.
Main Sponsor Soo Shau Kiong gave away the Championship Trophy to champions Chung Hwa, Likas apart from the Challenge Trophy.
