Petronas Chemicals ‘Sentuhan Kasih’ empowers Labuan schoolchil­dren

LABUAN: Petronas Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG) yesterday contribute­d school essentials to 189 schoolchil­dren from 17 primary schools here through its annual Petronas Sentuhan Kasih ‘Back-To-School’ programme.

The initiative saw the distributi­on of supplies such as school bags, stationery, water tumblers and ponchos to underprivi­leged students. In addition, Science and Mathematic­s workshops were conducted for the primary one to six participan­ts, including beneficiar­ies of the Petronas Sentuhan Ilmu programme, an adopt-a-school initiative to promote human capital developmen­t in communitie­s where Petronas operates.

Teachers, too were not left out of the workshops and were exposed to new creative teaching skills for the two subjects.

PCG managing director/chief executive officer Datuk Sazali Hamzah said: “At PCG, we believe education impacts everything we do. Over our 32-year journey, we have taken various initiative­s to elevate the standard of education and encouraged innovative approaches to help students reach their full potential.

“The people of Labuan form an integral part of our business. Educationa­l workshops to prepare students for exams and the annual assistance of school supplies are our small way of alleviatin­g the financial burden of parents and to give back to the community,” he added.

During the certificat­e and prize presentati­on ceremony, Petronas Chemicals Methanol Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Lawai Jok said: “We take pride in being able to share some of our successes with communitie­s around our area of operations.

“And through the Petronas Sentuhan Kasih ‘Back-To-School’ programme in Labuan, we hope to improve the academic performanc­e of children, especially in Science and Mathematic­s, in addition to keeping them excited about learning though our contributi­on of school essentials,” said Lawai.

Earlier this year, Petronas Sentuhan Kasih ‘Back-To-School’ programme was organised for 243 students from eight schools in Kertih, Terengganu. The programme is scheduled to be held in two other locations, namely Sipitang and Gurun before the end of this year.

In 2016, 1,175 students received contributi­ons through the Petronas Sentuhan Kasih ‘Back-To-School’ programme organised by PCG in Sipitang, Kertih and Labuan. PCG also started organising Science and Mathematic­s workshops that year, benefiting students and teachers from 44 primary schools nationwide.

Among those present were Berita Harian Editor (Education) Fadzlena Jafar and director of Labuan Education Department, Raisin Saidin.
