Creative technology generates RM7.6 bln revenue last year

CYBERJAYA: Malaysia’s creative technology sector generated a total revenue of RM7.6 billion last year with 10,000 employment created in the country presently, said Malaysia Digital Economy Corporatio­n (MDEC) Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Yasmin Mahmood.

She said MDEC’s creative content and technology cluster, which include animation, gaming and creative content, recorded the highest growth in export sales last year, contributi­ng RM1.17 billion, out of which RM567.86 million were attributed to animation and various form of production.

“Malaysia’s creative intellectu­al property (IP) is really making waves out there in the world. Malaysia’s IPs now scale beyond our shores into the region and into the global market.

“Malaysia’s BoBoiBoy The Movie released last year recorded RM20 million in ticket collection, higher than the collection recorded by Disney’s Frozen in Malaysia. BoBoiBoy was also screened at 50 theaters in South Korea,” she told reporters after the launch of MDEC’s Kre8tif ! Conference 2017 yesterday.

Yasmin said animation and creative content industry had enormous potential and became one of the main contributo­rs to the national income in recent years.

“MDEC is already working towards building a healthy and vibrant digital economy as it continuous­ly pushes boundaries to spur market growth,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Kre8tif! Conference is an annual event organised by MDEC since 2009, aimed to spark innovation and exploratio­n of major trends across the creative sector.

Themed “Emotion in Motion”, Kre8tif! 2017 which began today until Saturday, attracted some 500 participan­ts from South Korea, India, China, Japan, Singapore and the United States.

Among the activities organised throughout the fourday conference are talks by internatio­nal creative animation and digital technology experts, business matching sessions and animation movie screening, as well as animation workshop for kids. — Bernama
