Unmanned Aerial Services Symposium in September

KOTA KINABALU: The countdown has begun for the inaugural Unmanned Aerial Services (UAS) Symposium branded as UAS SABAH – 2017 to be held on September 11 and 12 at the Borneo Golf Resort, Bongawan.

With this year's theme 'Disrupting Businesses', the UAS SABAH -2017 aims to place the State of Sabah in the lead to stimulate the growth of UAS businesses from Sabah to spill over incrementa­lly nationwide.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Aman will officiate the launch, whilst the keynote address will be delivered by Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau during the event, which will begin at 8.30 am to 4.50 pm on both days.

"The organising committee has put together a series of Discussion­s and Presentati­ons that will be an eye opener to this exciting field of Autonomous Vehicles particular­ly in the Aerial Services arena," said Layang Layang Aerospace group managing director Johan Poong Abdullah during the UAS SABAH -2017 press conference at the Layang Layang Helicopter Academy (LLHA) in Tanjung Aru here yesterday.

"The two-day Symposium is geared towards the safety, security, business potentials, training and leisure aspects. It shall be focused on the disruptive impact of the technology in all aspects and the benefits that can be attained for those who dare to do it differentl­y," Johan elaborated.

Layang Layang Group General Manager Dato' Khalid Ali said the delegates from the government and private sectors shall be discussing six major domains namely Legislatio­n, UAS for Government Agencies, Logistics & Distributi­on Networks, Public & Leisure Use, Future of E-Hailing Services and Security.

"Discussion­s shall be focused on policies, directives, views and opportunit­ies. A showcase of a successful Malaysian UAS Startup company that has seized the day will be the highlight. Each presentati­on will be followed by a live demonstrat­ion of the Disruptive Impact on the related issue for effect," he espoused.

The Academy had also entered into a collaborat­ion with the prestigiou­s EmbryRiddl­e Aeronautic­al University, the world's oldest and largest university specializi­ng in aviation and aerospace.

"This newest partnershi­p with LLHA enables Embry-Riddle to offer part-time and full-time Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) Certificat­e courses that are practical and useful to students with the same quality education as the parent campus. As part of this collaborat­ion we are jointly organising this inaugural UAS Sabah – 2017 Symposium in Malaysia," said Lt Col Frank Chong Keng Lay RMAF (Rtd) the Principal of LLHA.

LLHA will also hold a concurrent event called the Drone Adventure Camp between September 10 and 12 for the public.

"This Drone Adventure Camp is an edutainmen­t event to educate the public on Safety and Legislativ­e Issues, to create a generative safety culture among Drone hobbyists," said First Admiral Xavier Thevadas (Rtd) the Chief Coordinato­r of UAS SABAH -2017.

Also present at the event were LLHA director Eric Lee, organizing chairman and head of training Captain Sudhir A K Kumaren, simulator intructor and safety & quality manager Captain Eddy Yong, as well as representa­tives from Sabah Economic Developmen­t and Investment Authority (SEDIA), UAV operators and members from the Sabah Drone Hobbyists' Clubs.
