MMEA evacuates baby in mercy mission from Banggi Island

KUDAT: A baby boy suspected of having bacterial infection in his blood vessel was rushed to the hospital here from Banggi Island in an emergency evacuation operation yesterday.

The 30-week-old premature baby was ferried by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcemen­t Agency’s (MMEA) boat from the Karakit health clinic, Banggi Island at 11.20 am.

MMEA Sabah and Labuan director (Maritime), Rear Admiral Mohd Zubil Mat Som, said the patient was accompanie­d by his parents, Norshila Abdul, 42, and Ramli Mujainal, 45, during the emergency evacuation exercise.

He said the MMEA’s area operations room 16 received an emergency call from health clinic medical officer, Dr Wong Biing Sheng at 10.15 am.

“We managed to ferry the patient by boat from the island and arrived at the marina jetty here at about 12.05 noon,” he said.

Mohd Zubil said that upon arrival at the jetty, the baby was constantly checked and reported to be in stable condition before receiving follow-up treatment at Kudat Hospital.

“MMEA is ready all the time to provide appropriat­e assistance to the community and other government agencies and department­s in the event of emergency or disaster,” he assured.

He advised the community to always report to MMEA if they are facing any emergency situations by using the the 999 emergency line.
