KOTA KINABALU: A vehicular accident along the Tuaran bypass early yesterday morning left one dead and another seriously injured.

City police chief ACP M Chandra said the deceased was a 41-year-old man who was driving a Perodua Rusa and the injured was his 55-year-old passenger.

There was also a nine-yearold boy with them in the vehicle and he sustained minor injuries along with the driver of the other vehicle.

According to Chandra, the three in the Perodua Rusa were related and the two adults were sellers at the tamu.

“The other vehicle was a Honda Civic which was driven by a 25year-old vehicle inspector at Puspakom,” he said, adding that the accident occurred about 4am near the bridge at Kampung Darau Inanam.

Initial police investigations revealed that the Honda Civic driver was travelling from Kota Kinabalu and headed for his residence in UA Apartment while those in the Perodua Rusa were coming from Kampung Darau and headed for the tamu in Tuaran.

“As the Honda passed the Kampung Darau bridge, the driver lost control of the vehicle and knocked the rear of the Perodua Rusa. The impact caused the Perodua Rusa to veer to the left side of the road and crash into a tree by the side of the road.

“The impact caused all three people in the Perodua Rusa to be thrown out of the vehicle,” Chandra said, adding that the driver of the Perodua Rusa succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident.

His 55-year-old passenger broke the bones on his hip and thigh, and the nine-year-old boy sustained minor injuries. A post-mortem later revealed that the driver died of chest and head injuries.

According to Chandra further, the accident was caused by the Honda Civic driver’s carelessness and failure to control his vehicle.

The case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, he disclosed.
