Bornean bead specialist to give talk
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Society is organising an illustrated talk on ‘Borneo Beads’ by world-renowned Bornean bead specialist Heidi (Adelheid) Munan, who is also the Honorary Curator of Beads at the Sarawak Museum, Kuching.
The presentation on ‘Borneo Beads’ will be held on August 16 at 7.30 pm at the Sabah Society Secretariat, Damai Plaza.
The variety and mystique of these beads, and the bead culture itself, transcends political boundaries on the world’s thirdlargest island, which includes the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan in Indonesia.
Heidi’s expertise and talk will be especially interesting to everyone interested in Borneo’s cultures, including researchers and others involved with tourism and the art and cultural sectors. The talk will explore the many stories of the people of Borneo, the history of the bead trade, beads as jewellery, their religious qualities and modern trends in bead design.
Heidi was educated in Switzerland and New Zealand. She has been studying the material culture of Sarawak for over 40 years and is the author of the definitive work on ‘Beads of Borneo’. So popular is her book that it has been reprinted several times since it was first published in 2011.
