SEA Games pride for UMS

Universi Malaysia Sabah takes pride in the par cipa on of athletes and officials at the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.

KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah takes pride in the participat­ion of athletes and officials at the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.

UMS has eight athletes comprising four staff and four students as well as four officials in the national contingent.

Its student athletes are Fathin Faqihah Mohd Yusuf (women's athletics), Christina Edris (women's rugby), Dayang Anak Manggie (women's rugby) and JI Fedalliah Claritta Jaimin (women's football), while its staff athletes are women's footballer­s Masturah Majid, Jaciah Jumilis, Haindee Mosroh and Shereilynn Elly Pius.

Another four of UMS staff are part of the national contingent as officials and they are led by its Sports Centre director Mohd Asyraaf Fong Abdullah who is also carrying weight as the national women's football team head coach, assistant coaches David Johnny and Azman Soaibah and Kitaman and masseur Salim Syed Ibrahim.

“Our involvemen­t in the national contingent is partly due in part to the university's encouragem­ent and support especially from UMS vice chancellor Prof Dr D Kamarudin D Mudin.

“This is something to be proud of and it is also a huge responsibi­lity and therefore we vow to do our best to make the country proud,” Asyraaf said.

Several SEA Games events have started since August 14 but the opening ceremony will be held on August 19.

The women's football team that is slated for a bronze medal begun their quest for glory against Philippine­s last night but results were not available at press time. Tomorrow they will face Myanmar, followed by a match with Thailand on Sunday before a date with Vietnam on August 24 (Thursday).

The South East Asian Games is the largest biennial sporting carnival in the region with 11 participat­ing countries. It is scheduled to conclude on August 30.
