Father and son held for drug abuse

KENINGAU: A father and son were among three drug suspects detained by the National AntiDrug Agency (AADK) during Ops Cegah in a village here yesterday.

The 50-year-old father and his son, 20, were arrested at their house about 6am while a 24-year-old man in the same neighbourh­ood was also arrested for drug abuse, said District AADK officer Azry Golbin @ Azmi yesterday.

He said the results of their urine tests showed that the three suspects were positive for syabu and were detained for investigat­ions under Section 3(1) of the Drug Addicts, Treatment and Rehabilita­tion Act 1983.

Azry, who also led the operation, said AADK would continue to focus on target groups in every potential village with drug addiction through informatio­n intelligen­ce and informatio­n provided by the public.

“AADK will continue to provide continuous supervisio­n to help the people stay safe and free from drugs and other social crimes stemming from drug addiction problems,” he said.

In Sandakan, police arrested two foreigners for possessing 223.6 grams of Methamphet­amine or syabu at Taman Mesra, Mile 3 here last Friday.

District police chief ACP Mohd Azhar Hamin said at a press conference yesterday that the suspects aged 30 to 40, were arrested around 5pm during ‘Ops Tapis’ and were remanded for 14 days under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for investigat­ion.

Early screening found that both suspects were tested positive for Methamphet­amine.

Azhar said that the drugs found on the susects were believed to be for the market around Sandakan district.

Meanwhile, Azhar disclosed that from April to August this year, the Narcotics Criminal Investigat­ion Unit had been active in conducting a few operations including Ops Tapis, Ops Sarang and Ops Bersepadu.

From the operations, a total of 749.6 grams of Methamphet­amine was seized and 339 people were arrested under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Eight were detained under Section 39B, two under Section 39A (2), 14 under Section 39A (1), 88 under Section 12 (2) and 227 people under Section 15 (1) (a).

Five offenders who were arrested three times under Section 15(1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 were sentenced to five years in jail and ordered to be given one stroke of cane under Section 39C of the same act.

At the same time, one person was arrested under the Dangerous Drugs Special Preventive Measures Act.
