Man claims trial to robbing woman’s purse

KOTA KINABALU: A man claimed trial at the Sessions Court here yesterday to robbing a woman of her purse.

Mohamad Azwan Rawas, 38, who was brought before judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim, was charged under Section 392 of the Penal Code.

The indictment provides for a jail term of up to 14 years and also liable to a fine or whipping, upon conviction.

Mohamad Azwan was alleged to have robbed Azlinawati Wahid, 33, at a back alley near Sugar Bun restaurant in Jalan Gaya here at 1.20pm on August 9.

The court fixed August 28 this year for case management and Mohamad Azwan, who was not represente­d, was ordered to be further detained in custody, pending disposal of the case.

Meanwhile, a man was sentenced to 12 months jail by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for possessing 0.1 gram of syabu.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherrin Abbie passed the sentence on Mohd Affendi Selamat, 30, after the latter pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The indictment carries a maximum fine of RM100,000 or a jail term of up to five years, or both, upon conviction.

Mohd Affendi was caught for possessing the drugs at Kampung Lembaga Padi in Jalan Tuaran Bypass, Inanam at 4pm on April 29.

In a separate case, another man was jailed for eight months by the same court for consuming syabu.

Wera Danan, 29, who appeared before the magistrate, admitted to the offence after his urine sample tested positive of the drugs.

He was caught for committing the offence on May 27.

The offence was framed under Section 15 (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, which carries a maximum fine of RM5,000 or a jail term of up to two years, upon conviction.

The magistrate also ordered Wera to be placed under police supervisio­n for two years.
