Sabah’s first community theatre for performing arts

-

KOTA KINABALU: The International Institute of Human Capital and Entrepreneur Sabah (IINSCAPE) has set up Sabah’s first community theatre for performing arts.

The theatre or aptly named Black Box KK, is a 400-seat state-of-the-art, flexible artistic theatre located at eighth floor, Suria Sabah Shopping Mall here.

IINSCAPE chief executive officer Terence Chee said the establishment of Black Box KK is one of the key measures of the government towards realising the potential of the creative industries as a new growth sector in the State’s economy.

He said the creation of the multipurpose black box performance space will provide a variety of uses for visual and performing arts, creative forums and other events and in addition, will ensure adequate rehearsal spaces for local creative talents and youth.

“In essence, the community theatre will be a contributing platform to the professional development of young local talents, groups and companies,” he said.

“With regard to this, we are organising a community project called ‘Sabah Glow - Standing in the eyes of the world’, a series of performance featuring Sabah’s upcoming talents that have shined in the national/international arena,” said Chee.

He said the project aims to galvanise active creative participation among youth in the State with the successful local Sabahan performers serving as role models. The first series, named Sabah Glow 1.0 is scheduled on August 25, 26 and 27 at Black Box KK from 8pm to 10pm.

“The main performance for the event will be by a Sabahan duo called Dynamite May whose members are two Sabahans, Radzwan Syafique Ramle and Fakhri Arif. In June 2017, the duo was the grand finalists out of more than 500 contestants in the Russian TV talent reality program, “The Winner” in Moscow.

“The video of their performance went viral on Facebook and received more than 100,000 views showcasing Sabahan talent on Russian soil,” he added.

“In this regard, we are hoping for your support in making the Sabah Glow 1.0 project a success,” Chee said.
