KOTA KINABALU: A 54-yearold man was put under a two-year bond of good behaviour by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for trying to commit suicide.

Chan Maw Yin, who pleaded guilty before magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie, was ordered to pay the bond of RM500, in default, two weeks’ jail, with two local sureties.

He pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 309 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

The unrepresented accused had attempted to commit suicide by slitting his throat at Taman Juta in Penampang at 11.45am on March 25.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Suzie Kupit told the court that on that day, a police report was lodged by a doctor who was on duty at a hospital emergency ward yellow zone, here.

The doctor stated in his report that he had received a patient (later known as the accused) who had slit his throat in an attempt to commit suicide.

An investigation by the police showed that the accused had slit his throat several times as he wanted to commit suicide because of debts.

In an unrelated case, a teenage boy was charged in the same court for robbing a 17-year-old girl.

No plea was recorded from the boy, who is also aged 17.

The boy was alleged to have committed the robbery by taking away the victim’s cellphone at a tuition centre at Putatan Point at 7pm on July 26.

The court fixed August 23 to remention the case at the Juvenile’s Court and released the accused on RM3,000 bail with two local sureties.
