-

TAWAU: Higher Education Deputy Minister, Datuk Dr Mary Yap Kain Ching has advised students to appreciate the history of Malaysia’s independence and the formation of Malaysia.

“All students and the young generation should not marginalize the history books of Malaysia despite the overwhelming array of sophisticated gadgets nowadays.

“There is a dire need for everyone to hold on to such a heavy responsibility in maintaining and continuing the harmony we enjoy today,” Mary said when officiating at the State-level National Narration Program 2017 held SJKC Yuk Chin hall here yesterday morning.

Mary said the people should always remember that once the country had attained its independent, it does not mean that it would be independent forever if “we fail to preserve and appreciate the struggle for independence”.

“This program aims to foster and nourish the spirit of national integration, the country’s history and the struggle of previous leaders,” Mary said.

She added that the program was a good platform for the youngsters to understand well and appreciate the principles of the Rukun Negara.

She believed this program would also be able to educate and inculcate the spirit of patriotism and love for the country regardless of race and religion.

Also present were the Sabah Information Director Haji Suwadi bin Haji Guliling, Tawau Municipal Council president Alijus Sipil and the school headmistress Puan Chang Li Yun.
