Workshop to raise standard of caregivers

KOTA KINABALU: The fourth Sabah Caregiver Training Workshop will be held at Hakka Hall off Tanjung Lipat from 8am to 5pm on September 14.

Themed ‘All About Fall’, the workshop is jointly organized by the Geriatric Unit of Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and the Federation of Chinese Associatio­ns Sabah (FCAS).

Head of Geriatric Unit at QEH, Dr Gordon Pang led the organizing committee to call on FCAS president Datuk Seri Panglima Dr T.C. Goh here recently.

The Geriatric Unit in QEH started on March 1, 2012 with the objectives of uplifting the quality of life of the elderly; training and elevating the standard of caregivers for the elderly; integratin­g the elderly with their family members and community in their daily lives; and enabling early diagnosis of their illnesses in order to take necessary action to assist the elderly.

The workshop aims to educate medical personnel, caregivers and the public on geriatric medicine and knowledge in caregiving about fall for the elderly.

It also acts as a platform for the public, medical personnel and non-government­al organizati­ons (NGOs) to interact, share knowledge and explore opportunit­ies in the joint effort to improve caregiving for the elderly.

The workshop will be divided into 10 stations, namely pharmacy, dietician, speech therapist, occupation­al therapy, physiother­apy, nursing, auditory, wound care, oral health and social welfare.

There will be 100 seats available for medical personnel and 200 seats open to the public. Seats are limited and subject to availabili­ty.

Registrati­on for the public is free of charge while participan­ts from private hospitals, clinics and elderly homes are required to pay RM50 per person.

The closing date for registrati­on is September 4.

The organizing committee also wishes to mark its appreciati­on to Goh for his full support towards the event and FCAS vice president Kapitan Lim Vun Chan for sponsoring the venue and food on that day.
