M’sia achieve six gold target in wushu

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian wushu exponents ended their Kuala Lumpur SEA Games (KL2017) campaign with a haul of six gold, five silver, and three bronze medals in the three-day competitio­n which concluded Tuesday.

The Malaysian athletes were in fine form as they bettered the country’s two-gold outing at the last SEA Games in Singapore two years ago.

In this 29th edition of the sporting extravagan­za, Yeap Wai Kin bagged two gold for the host nation in the competitio­n held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) here.

He fought his way to the men’s jianshu gold with a score of 9.67 points, upsetting compatriot and World Cup winner Wong Weng Son who took the silver. Yeap also earned his second gold in the men’s qiangshu with 9.68 points.

Compatriot and 2015 Singapore Sea Games champion Loh Jack Chang contribute­d another two gold for Malaysia in the men’s taijijian and taijiquan events.

Loh picked 9.67 points in the men’s taijijian event to edge Indonesia’s Bobie Valentinus Gunawan who took the silver with 9.65 points. In the men’s taijiquan, Loh, who hails from Sarawak, clinched the gold with 9.66 points while Singapore’s Samuel Tan Wei Han took the silver with 9.52 points.

Meanwhile, Diana Bong won the women’s nanquan event by garnering 9.66 points, beating Myanmar’s Myint Aye Thitsar who took the silver with 9.64 points.

Ho Mun Hua also impressed with a gold in the men’s nanquan category, garnering 9.67 points over Vietnam’s Pham Quoc Khanh who took the silver with 9.66 points.

Malaysia’s team coach Lim Yew Fai said he was happy with the achievemen­t of his charges, having done so with what he described as minimal mistakes and showing composure under pressure.

Malaysia’s five silver medals were courtesy of men’s jianshu, women’s jianshu, women’s gunshu, men’s qiangshu and women’s qiangshu.

The three bronze came from men’s daoshu/gunshu, men’s nandao/nangun and women’s taijijian categories. – Bernama
