Innovation centre soon for Sabah

-

KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) is in the midst of creating an innovation centre in Sabah, said its minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau.

He said the centre would be a collaboration between the Federal Government, Malaysian Foundation of Innovation (YIM) and State Government agencies.

Tangau said the centre would be modeled after the Centre for Innovation and Creative Economy in Korea.

He said Korea has a Centre for Innovation and Creative Economy in every province, which was a collaboration between the national government, provincial government and conglomerates.

"Each party will contribute USD1 million to finance the centre every year."

Tangau said some of the conglomerates in Korea would contribute in kind by sending their staff to the centre.

He said the main objective of creating the innovation centre in Sabah was to enable innovators to innovate and they could also establish their own start-ups with their innovations.

"We shall collaborate with government agencies which are already doing incubation.

"In principle, they have agreed to this (establishing the centre), but we need to work out the details," Wilfred said this after officiating at the 'Enhancing SME Growth in Sabah: SIRIMFraunhofer Programme' organized by SIRIM here yesterday.
