Union among Malaysians becomes more crucial today — Nancy

-

PUTRAJAYA: The need of a union among Malaysians that transcends race, religion and even gender has not dwindled, but perhaps become even more crucial today, Minister in the Prime Minister Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said.

Nancy said over 60 years ago, the nation fought for its independence, an endeavour that would not have been accomplished but for the cooperative support of the entire country.

Thus, she said in this period of growth and development, Malaysians must not forget to look back to what led this nation to where it is today.

“If we are to effectively pursue the development of our country, we must not forget the values that brought us here today,” she said in a statement yesterday in conjunction with the National Day 2017 celebration.

She said 60 years ago to the date, the then British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan hoped that Malaya’s day of independence would forever be remembered by the people.

“To describe the year of 1957 as a period of remarkably great change would, in my opinion, still be an understatement.

“It gave us the opportunity to be free to lead our own nation according to the wishes and principles of the rakyat, something we take for granted far too often,” Nancy said.

Thus, she urged all Malaysians to never forget the countless victories this country has achieved as a single unified voice. - Bernama
