PBS determinant factor – Maximus
TAWAU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) can be the determinant factor for Barisan Nasional (BN) in the coming general election, especially in the eastern part of the state.
Its acting president, Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili in disclosing this, said PBS had strong footings in most parts of Sabah and supported the coalition alongside other component parties.
PBS has 61 divisions statewide with members ranging from 1,500 to 8,000 in each state constituency.
“Hence in closely fought seats, our multiracial members can be real assets for BN’s victory,” said the Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister.
He added that PBS had a good track record since the party’s inception 32 years ago.
“The opposition is trying to make people believe they have the ‘cure’ to all problems, and are selling ‘medicines’ to confuse voters. Do not fall prey to their games,” said Maximus.
Having said that, he urged all party divisions to activate its membership drive to further strengthen the party’s footing in Sabah.
“We will be carrying out membership drives statewide actively from now until the elections. It is vital to ensure the people support a party like PBS, which has been consistent in its struggle to fight for the rights of Sabah and Sabahans as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),” he said when opening the joint 32nd annual general meeting for N50 Tanjung Batu, N55 Balung and N58 Merotai here yesterday.
He noted that with the general election drawing closer, all divisions are urged to activate their machinery, adding that PBS is ready to face its opponents come election.
“I have reiterated many times that BN may have its weaknesses, it is not perfect, but the coalition is still the best option for the people.
“It has proven its ability to govern (the country). The opposition parties are ‘young’ and their leaders are fractions from BN, who left due to dissatisfaction.
“They had all the powers before, as many were holding high posts in the government. But they failed to solve anything, what more now,” stressed Maximus.
He expressed confidence that with the cooperation, support and unity amongst PBS members, the party will be able to overcome all obstacles ahead.
