KUNAK: A Pakistani was detained for failing to produce his identification document and driving license and attempting to bribe a traffic policeman with RM50 to be allowed to get off scotfree.

Kunak police chief Superintendent M Nasaruddin M Nasir, in a statement yesterday disclosed that the 21-year-old suspect was arrested at Jalan Kampung Sungai Atas about 7pm.

Nasaruddin said a police team, while on patrol, stopped the suspect who was riding a Honda EX-5 motorcycle. During inspection, the suspect failed to produce his identification document and license.

“During inspection, the suspect took out a RM50 note and offered it as a bribe to the traffic policeman, who declined and warned the suspect not to attempt to bribe him. The suspect kept harping on the policeman to accept the bribe as he wanted to be set free,” he said, adding that the suspect was then apprehended and taken to the Kunak police headquarters for further action.

Nasaruddin said the case had been classified under Section 17 (b) of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 and the suspect would be handed over to the MACC for further action.

Police also arrested two local men for robbing 30 kilogrammes of bird’s nests worth RM26,000 at Gua Madai on Saturday.

He said a local man had lodged a police report after receiving a phone call from his worker about 4.30pm informing him that five men had approached him and held knives to his neck and waist. The five persons then tore open a sack containing bird’s nests and seized it before fleeing from the scene.

“A police team from the criminal investigation division nabbed one of the suspects about 8.30 pm on the same day at Kampung Dasar Baru.

“Another suspect later surrendered himself at the Kunak police headquarters. Both of them were then held for further action,” he said.

Nasaruddin added the case would be investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code.
