Police to step up security during Malaysia Day celebratio­n

KOTA KINABALU: The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) Sabah will continue to step up security measures in the State during the national-level Malaysia Day celebratio­ns which will be held in Likas here from September 15 to 17.

Sabah Police Commission­er Datuk Ramli Din said measures were taken to ensure no militants or terrorists could enter the State amid the preparatio­n of the celebratio­n.

“We have sufficient manpower for security and visitors surveillan­ce, as well as traffic control in every area during the Malaysia Day celebratio­ns. Although there are no reports of militants to date, our security forces will continue to remain vigilant,” he said when met at the Malaysia Day Patriot Cyclothon at the Sabah State Government Administra­tion Complex here yesterday.

Ramli added the PDRM would also focus on ensuring the traffic situation was under control during the three-day celebratio­ns.

Meanwhile, some 500 participan­ts took part in the Malaysia Day Patriot Cyclothon, covering a distance of 18 kilometres starting from the administra­tion complex.

The event was officiated by Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Haji Noor, representi­ng Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman.

It was jointly organized by the Sabah National Civics Bureau (BTN) in collaborat­ion with the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), federal and state agencies.

The participan­ts cycled a distance of 18 kilometres beginning from the State Government Administra­tion Complex, along Tanjung Lipat to Padang Merdeka before returning to the starting point.

Hajiji said the participan­ts comprised local leaders, cycling associatio­n members, nongovernm­ental organizati­ons and individual­s.

“Various programmes were held with the aim of instilling patriotism and to commemorat­e the historical days, namely, the National Day and Malaysia Day, which will be celebrated on September 16.”

He said Malaysia Day celebratio­ns at the grassroots level all over Sabah have reflected the increasing involvemen­t from the public, especially the younger generation.

Also present were Community Developmen­t and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Edward Yong Oui Fah, State Secretary Tan Sri Sukarti Wakiman, Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai, BTN director-general Datuk Ibrahim Saad and BTN Sabah director Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali.
