Joyful M’sia Day celebratio­n in Labuan

LABUAN: More than 2,000 people in 105 contingent­s took part in the parade held in conjunctio­n with the 54th Malaysia Day celebratio­n at Dataran Labuan yesterday.

Thousands of people lined the streets to witness the procession which involved the participat­ion of government and private agencies, uniformed bodies, public and private learning institutio­ns, schools, Community Developmen­t Department (Kemas) kindergart­ens and nongovernm­ental organisati­ons.

Gracing the event, which was filled with cultural performanc­es and patriotism spirit programmes, was Labuan Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Isli.

In his speech, Rozman called on the people to continue to strengthen unity, defend dignity, and sovereignt­y of the country.

He said Labuan was considerin­g making the Malaysia Day celebratio­n an annual event on island.

Meanwhile, in Sungai Petani, 58 contigents, comprising 1,717 participan­ts, took part in the Kuala Muda district-level Merdeka Day parade at Dataran Jam Besar yesterday.

The event, which started at 8 am, began with the singing of the national anthem by a band from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Keat Hwa, followed by a march-past by the contigents.

Kuala Muda district officer Nordin Yahya said the contingent­s comrpised nine uniformed bodies, 23 from government department­s and agencies, as well as learning institutio­ns, and 26 nongovernm­ental organisati­ons.
