MMEA carries out medical evacuation for two Kudat islanders

KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcemen­t Agency (MMEA) again came to the rescue of two people from islands off Kudat by transporti­ng them to the mainland for medical treatment.

MMEA Regional Maritime Director for Sabah and Labuan, Maritime Rear Admiral Mohd Zubil Mat Som, said the medical evacuation for Peraman Kahil and Otomardika Suramin was carried out on Sunday night.

Mohd Zubil in a statement yesterday said Peraman 35, was diagnosed with TRO appendicit­is while Otomardika was vomiting blood.

According to Mohd Zubil, MMEA Kudat received a call from the doctor based at Pulau Banggi Health Clinic about 9.10pm requesting for assistance to transfer a patient who was diagnosed as having appendicit­is and his condition was very serious.

The Health Department’s boat on the island has yet to be repaired and they needed urgent evacuation of the patient, he said, adding at the same time the MMEA operation room in Kudat received a call from the leader of its Bot Kilat 1 which was on duty at Pulau Mandi Darah, requesting for permission to transfer a villager to the mainland for treatment.

“The villager from Pulau Mandi Darah who is also the village chief, was vomiting blood,” he said.

Bot Kilat 1 with Otomardika and his wife Sumping binti Dumatu arrived the Kudat marina jetty at 11.35pm while Bot Adal 03 which was sent to pick up Peraman from Pulau Banggi arrived 10 minutes later.

On hand at the jetty were two ambulances and medical personnel from the Kudat district hospital to administer initial treatment before rushing them to the hospital, he said.

Mohd Zubil reiterated that MMEA is ever ready to assist in any emergency situation.
