Duo jailed for possessing drugs

KOTA KINABALU: A man and a woman were sentenced to serve time in jail by the High Court here yesterday after admitting to possession of illegal drugs.

Andy Lim Shau Seng, 31, and Rubiah Lahani Andul Rahman, 33, who appeared before Justice Datuk Nurchaya Hj Arshad admitted as charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39A (2) of the same Act.

The indictment carries an imprisonme­nt for life or not less than five years and whipping of not less than 10 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

Andy Lim was sent to 15 years behind bars plus 10 strokes of the cane for possessing 664.9 grams of syabu at a restaurant in Jalan Gaya on August 29, 2016.

Rubiah, who was a worker at a boutique, was jailed five years for having 56.43 grams of syabu at a restaurant at a shopping building on May 17, 2016.

The judge ordered for both accused to serve their jail terms from the date of their arrests.

Deputy public prosecutor Gan Peng Kun led the prosecutio­n while Andy Lim was represente­d by Kuala Lumpur-based lawyer Kitson Fong, and assisted by Vivien Thien. Counsel Hairul V Othman represente­d Rubiah.
