SEA Games gold medallist joins Umno Keningau

KENINGAU: Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian, the winner of the gold medal in the 110-metre hurdle event in the recently concluded SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, applied to join the Keningau Umno Youth on Monday.

His membership applicatio­n form was handed over to Keningau Umno Youth chief Nik Nazri Nik Zawawi at a thanksgivi­ng ceremony to celebrate Rayzam’s success held at Nazri’s residence here.

More than 300 people attended the event, including family members of Nazri and Rayzam, community leaders and youths in the district.

Nazri said the thanksgivi­ng dinner was to celebrate the success of Rayzam who was among the athletes that had contribute­d medals to the country in the SEA Games.

He said Rayzam was a great source of pride for all youths in the state, including this district and the interior for his success in winning the gold medal.

“I hope Rayzam will become an icon for youths, especially sports athletes in this area, including the interior and also the state,” he said.

Nazri expressed the hope that with Rayzam joining Umno, it will raise the spirit of youths in this district to join the party.

Meanwhile, Rayzam thanked Nazri for according him and his family the honour with the thanksgivi­ng ceremony.

He said his success at the SEA Games belonged to all Sabahans, interior and Keningau districts because with their prayers and support, he managed to achieve that level.

“This achievemen­t will also be shared with athletes competing in sporting events whether at the state, national or Asian level. I believe in high self-discipline and with confidence in this sport, we can certainly succeed,” he said.

Rayzam said he hoped in the future there will be more sports athletes from here as well as in the interior and the state succeeding to a higher level, not only at the national level and the SEA Games but at the Olympics.
