Leaders, parties pay tribute to late Sultan

MELAKA: Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron conveyed his condolence­s on the demise of the Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah.

“The late sultan was a people’s ruler and was highly respected during the two terms that he reigned as Yang di-Pertuan Agong as well as the ruler of Kedah,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

Sultan Abdul Halim passed away at 2.30pm on Monday at Istana Anak Bukit in Alor Setar, Kedah. His Royal Highness was 89. Idris said the demise of Sultan Abdul Halim was a huge loss to the people of the country, especially Kedahans.

On behalf of the Melaka government, he expressed sadness and conveyed his condolence­s to the Kedah royal family.

“May the Almighty bless his soul and place him among the righteous. Al-Fatihah,” he said.

In Shah Alam, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali also conveyed his condolence­s to the Sultanah of Kedah, Tuanku Hajah Haminah, children and royal family.

“The late sultan contribute­d so much to the federal and Selangor government­s during his tenure as the fifth and 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The government and the people of Selangor together with the people of Kedah feel the loss of a beloved, active and peopleorie­nted ruler,” he said in a statement here.

Meanwhile, political parties also conveyed their condolence­s on the demise of Sultan Abdul Halim.

Barisan Nasional (BN) component party, MCA, described the late Sultan Abdul Halim as the people’s ruler who would be remembered by the people of Kedah and Malaysia.

“Al-Fatihah. The late Sultan will be remembered by all the people of Kedah and Malaysia as a people’s ruler,” said MCA on its Facebook page.

On behalf of PAS, its president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang expressed his condolence­s to the Kedah royal family.

“Surely, all the people are saddened by the demise of the sultan, who was loved by the people. May the Almighty bless his soul and place him among the righteous,” he said.

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), in a Facebook post, expressed its condolence­s to the royal family, the people of Kedah and Malaysians in general.

“Al-Fatihah. Tuanku was a people-oriented ruler whom the people loved. He was the Yang diPertuan Agong from 1970 to 1975 and from 2011 to 2016,” it said in the post.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) in its condolence­s message prayed that the Almighty would bless Sultan Abdul Halim’s soul and place him among the righteous.

In George Town, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, in a statement, also conveyed his condolence­s and said the loss was not just felt by the people of Kedah but by all Malaysians, especially because he was known as a caring ruler.

He said Sultan Abdul Halim twice reigned as Yang di-Pertuan Agong and that made him very close to people and loved by all.
