Showing patriotic spirit via social media not enough, youths told

SANDAKAN: Modern technology has made young generation value the spirit of independence in different ways, said Sekong assemblyman, Datuk Samsudin Yahya.

He said most young people only showed the spirit of patriotism through social media instead of showing it physically.

“Nowadays, we are colonized by technology. Our society, especially young people are busy uploading photos or post update on the spirit of independence on social media, but doing physically nothing.

“They forget that patriotism must also be demonstrated through action such as joining any independence program celebration, or for example, putting flag in front of their house,” he said this when officiating at the ‘Cinta Negara’ Seminar and the Malaysia Day at Kg. Segaliud for 2017 at Segaliud Multipurpose Hall, Sandakan, yesterday.

Samsudin added that all parties needed to work together to ensure that the present and future generations should be exposed to the spirit of love for the country in order to know and appreciate past freedom fighters.

“In fact, parents also play an important role in educating children about patriotism.

We cannot let this technology occupy the minds of teenagers until one day they forget the national spirit.

“They were born in a peaceful country and they were less concerned about our country’s history, so the school also plays a role in educating the people how this country gained its independence.

“Most importantly, the parents need to educate the children to know the leaders of the country, perhaps by bringing them to the museum or the country’s monument, including state events, to help them appreciate our independence,” he said.

Therefore, Samsudin said that all parties needed to work together to ensure that the present and future generations would be exposed to the spirit of love for the country to know and appreciate the country’s freedom fighters.

About 23 students were elected to be registered as KWAMP’s beneficiaries during the event.

Samsudin also said that an open space hall for SK Segaliud would be built and donated RM1,000 for the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) fund.

He also donated two units of computers for the school’s needs and the donation of RM1,000 for the PTA fund of SK Terusan Baru, Sandakan.
