DOSH has inspected 332 escalators in Sandakan

SANDAKAN: Sabah Department of Occupation­al Safety and Health (DOSH) has inspected some 332 escalators at shopping complexes and malls here last year, said its director Zahari Hitam.

He said that through the Safety Escalator Usage Operation, the department had successful­ly inspected 1,617 escalators nationwide.

He said the DOSH had intensifie­d the awareness program on the safety usage of escalator to prevent escalator accident involving children under 12 years old.

“Based on the record in 2015, there were seven cases of escalator accident reported nationwide involving children.

“Although accidents involving escalators and lifts in the state are low, it is not desirable to be taken lightly because accident involves both of these machines which could result in serious bodily injuries and possibly deaths,” he said at the launch of Escalator and Lift Safety Awareness Program 2017 held at Harbour Mall Sandakan, yesterday.

The program was organised by DOSH Sabah in collaborat­ion with Sandakan Harbour Mall, National Institute of Occupation­al Safety and Health (NIOSH) and MS Elevators (M) Sdn Bhd

This campaign was in line with the Occupation­al Safety and Health Master Plan 2020 (OSH-MP2020) under OSH through its social responsibi­lity of ‘LIFE (Lift and Escalator) Safety Promotiona­l Program which was conducted at a public centre.

The program was also attended by Advisor of Harbour Mall Datu Thomas Lau and Manager of NIOSH Sabah, Mohd Hussin Abd Salam.

The one-day program featured talk, exhibition, video display and demonstrat­ion on the proper usage of escalator.
