UTM team bags two awards in IDEERS Competition
THE University Technologi Malaysia (UTM) team has again been rewarded for their impressive achievements in IDEERS 2017.
The competition entitled ‘Introducing and Demonstrating Earthquake Engineering Research in Schools (IDEERS)’ was held at the Taiwan National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE), Taipei from September 19 to 23 this year.
This build and shaking structure competition looks more attractive with the presence of many new universities worldwide and other universities from Malaysia. This year, the UTM team participated in the postgraduate category, which will be awarded with impressive achievements on the participation.
It was a jubilant moment when the postgraduate team received two awards this year, namely, the Best Presentation Award and the Best Design Idea of Exhibits Awards. The UTM team consisted of nine undergraduate students, and among them were Mohd Fadhli Abd Rashid (Sabah), Qurratu Aini binti Siat @ Sirat (Sarawak), Nurul Amiera binti Rosman (Kuala Lumpur), Nur Amalina binti Anuar (Selangor). The team was supervised by Mohd Zamri Ramli and Mohd Nur Asmawisham Alel from the Engineering Seismology and Earthquake Engineering Research (e-SEER) group.
In this competition, students were required to construct a wooden model according to the structural rules and specifications provided by the organizer.
The model was then loaded with steel blocks and shaken together with the other teams’ models on big vibrating table until the models collapsed according to the judges’ desired seismic strength.
