Six-month-old foetus found under a bridge
SANDAKAN: The body of a sixmonth old foetus was found by members of the public under a bridge at Jambatan 4, Kampung Air off Jalan Pelabuhan here, yesterday morning.
Police chief ACP Mohd Azhar bin Hamin said a team of police rushed to Kampung Air upon being informed by the public at around 8.45am.
“From their initial investigation at the water village, the police found the body of a male foetus which was kept in a box. The foetus found was complete with a head, two hands, two legs and an intact umbilical cord with no placenta. External examination also found that there was no injuries to the foetus.
“The foetus was then taken to the Duchess of Kent Hospital and was certified dead by Dr Mohd Faiz. The foetus, weighing 318 grams and measuring 34 cm in length was estimated to be around six months old and based on the condition of the foetus, the foetus had just been born,” he said when contacted by reporters, yesterday.
The outcome of the postmortem also found that there was no indication of any internal injury and the foetus was believed have died during delivery by the mother, he added.
Mohd Azhar requested the public, especially private clinics or village midwives who had information about any births within this period, to come forward to assist the police in their investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code.
