SANDAKAN: An elderly woman was killed while another person sustained severe injuries when a car hit them as they were crossing the road at Buli Sim Sim Road near Taman Grandview here around 5.30 pm on Saturday.

Sandakan police chief ACP Mohd Azhar Hamin yesterday said the dead victim was identified as Ommai Jurail, 72, and the severely injured was Fadilah Saibil, 54.

The car driver was a 73-yearold woman who was on her way from Sandakan town to mile 4 Labuk Road when the incident took place. She was not injured.

Police said both victims were sent to the Duchess of Kent hospital but Ommai was pronounced dead after succumbing to severe head injuries, while Fadilah was reported to be in a critical condition.

Investigation found that both victims were trying to cross the road but were careless and did not check for incoming vehicles. The driver, who was on the right lane, was unable to avoid them when they suddenly decided to cross the road. As a result the car hit both victims, causing them to be flung to the front of the car before collapsing to the ground.

Neither the victims nor the driver were believed to be under the influence of alcohol but blood tests are being conducted by the Chemist Department.

Weather was reported to be good at the time of the accident which is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of Road Transport Act 1987.
