Sipitang, Kuala Penyu kick off CM Cup

KOTA KINABALU: The fifth edition of the Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Musa Aman Cup InterDistr­ict Football Tournament kicks off with a match between Sipitang and Kuala Penyu today.

The Group III qualifying fixture will take place at the Sipitang Sports Complex starting at 4pm.

Beaufort complete the threeteam Group III where they will face Kuala Penyu tomorrow and Sipitang on October 14.

The qualifying rounds will see 26 district teams divided into eight groups to fight for a place in the Final Rounds.

Group I comprise Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Kota Belud; Group II (Penampang, Papar, Putatan); Group IV (Keningau, Tenom, Nabawan, Tambunan); Group V (Tawau, Semporna, Kunak, Lahad Datu); Group VI (Ranau, Tongod, Telupid); Group VII (Beluran, Sandakan, Kinabatang­an); and Group VIII (Kudat, Pitas, Kota Marudu).

The matches for Group V, Group VI, Group VII and Group VIII will be held from October 13-15 while the Group I, Group II and Group IV from October 20-22.

The qualifying group stages is played on a single round league format where only the group winners will advance into the Final Rounds, which will take place here from November 1-5.

For the record, invitation­al team FT Labuan emerged as champions in the fourth edition of the tournament last year.

Labuan defeated Tawau 4-2 in the penalty shoot-out after the teams were tied at 1-1 in regulation time and extra time.
