MMMC: Hallmark of academic excellence

-

WITH a hallmark of academic excellence and an enviable record of accomplishment in providing quality medical and dental education, MelakaManipal Medical College (Manipal University), MMMC is committed to provide a curriculum that offers diverse learning opportunities.

The commitment to excellence is one that is ‘Inspired by Life’ and tempered by ethical service to the nation and humanity.

Manipal has been synonymous with high quality medical education since the 1960s.

For many Malaysians, it was the favoured destination for a superior education in medicine, dentistry and even engineering.

Manipal University, India the parent institution for MMMC, celebrated its laurels for being ranked No.1 among private universities of India in the ‘Education World India Private University Rankings 2017’ and ‘Best Universities Survey 2017 (The Week)’.

MMMC was established 20 years ago and it is now known as one of the best medical schools in Malaysia and provider of high quality medical professionals to the Malaysian health system.

In fact, MMMC’s reputation has spread far and wide with many of its alumni spread across the globe.MMMC’s repute stems from its drive towards excellence in the services it provides to students, and its enviable record of awards and accolades are a showcase to its accomplishments.

MMMC’s programmes are unique in that the twinning feature requires students to go to India first and then return to Malaysia for the clinical training in Malaysian general hospitals.

This is in reverse of the usual practice of twinning programs in our country and ensures that MMMC students get the best of two worlds.

Manipal has one of the largest Anatomy and Pathology museums in the world and it is deemed one of the best museums in Asia with over 1000 dissected specimens on display. The students perform real cadaver dissections during their learning at Manipal.

It thus lays an excellent foundation in the basic sciences in the first phase of theirstudies in Manipal, India, and reinforced with thorough clinical training in Malaysian hospitals in the second phase.

MMMC commenced with the first batch of MBBS students in 1997, and since then almost 3500 graduates have passed through its hallowed corridors up to July.

MMMC doctors are performing with distinction within the Malaysian health system and many have advanced to postgraduate level.

To complement the success of the medical program, Dentistry was introduced in 2009 and MMMC seems set to pursue the self-imposed high standards in dental education too.

If the numbers clamouring for the program is any indication, it seems that the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) is set to be another winner for MMMC. Leveraging on the Manipal’s reputation in India as the top dental school, MMMC has certainly modelled a winner.

To improve the chances for entry into the very popular BDS, applicants are well advised to sign up for their Foundation in Science program (FiS).

MMMC’s FiS is a 1-year preUniversity course completed solely in the Melaka campus amidst the serene surroundings of Bukit Baru.

MMMC’s Foundation course is unique and purpose built to prepare students for the MBBS and BDS undergraduate degrees.

The inclusion of subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, and Oral Biology atFoundation level provides a better insight into these subjects while preparing the students for the undergraduate programme.

Despite the rigours and intensity of the course, it is promising to note that the FiS has a remarkable success rate of 95 pct and above, and students who have been through the Foundation have found that the solid groundwork in the FiS has made for a steeper learning curve when they eventually move onto their degree studies.

Incentive for parents who would like their children to obtain the much coveted Manipal University degree is that the FiS student is given top priority into MMMC’s MBBS and BDS programs.

Online application can now be submitted to MMMC for the MBBS (October 2017 intake) viawww.manipal.edu/melaka.

Or better still, drive to the Campus in Melaka and be convinced of the commitment of Melaka-Manipal to high quality education.
