MMTC official representative of Ofqual UK in Malaysia

KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysia Music Teachers College (MMTC) has taken another step further in establishing itself as one of the best music and life skills colleges in Malaysia by becoming the official representative of the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation United Kingdom (Ofqual UK) in Malaysia, via an affiliation with the Training Qualifications UK (TQUK).

“TQUK welcomes the opportunity to work with international providers to help learners pursue careers using UK-regulated qualifications, and this affiliation with TQUK gives us the qualification to award accreditation, which is regulated by the awarding office -- Ofqual of the UK Parliament,” said MMTC principal and CEO Peter Chua.

He said that MMTC takes its role seriously in adhering to the UK standards.

Peter and several representatives from MMTC stated in a statement after attending the TQUK International Conference, that was held on October 16 at the Regal Hotel, Kowloon Hong Kong. The conference was attended by representatives from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and Malaysia.

It was chaired by Andrew Walker, the Managing Director of TQUK, and was also attended by Jonathan Ledger from the Department of International Trade UK, who delivered a presentation during the conference. Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) specialists from the UK were also present.

TQUK currently offers over 300 Ofqual-accredited courses and MMTC is proud to be one of the only affiliated centres in Malaysia and the only one in Sabah.

“This move is in line with our desire to be an educational body that endorses creativity and vocational learning,” said Peter.

He added that in Sabah and Malaysia, most of society is still holding on to the notion that intelligence and success have always got to do with academic excellence. However, MMTC believes that there are many types of intelligence, even for children who are not academicallyinclined, and so, they take it upon themselves to shine these students who are ‘diamonds in the rough’.

MMTC is currently in the process of relocating its centre to a more spacious 1.5-acre land on Jalan Punai Tanah, Likas, next to the State Education Department and the Likas Sports Complex. The larger campus is hoped to be able to accommodate more students in its new vocational centre in the near future.

In addition to that, MMTC will also be setting up its first MMTC overseas college in Dong Guan, China to offer skills training and development.

MMTC’s first overseas college joint-venture in China is a testimony of China’s confidence in MMTC’s credibility as the first Malaysian skill training centre to be established in China.

As the icing on the cake, MMTC has also received a crowdfunding approval for its company, which has the potential to become a public listed company (IPO).
