Widow to hang for murder of bank manager

- By Jane Moh

SIBU: Ling Hang Tsyr, the wife of slain bank manager Wong Jing Kui, was yesterday sentenced to death by hanging after she was found guilty of abetting in the murder of her husband five years ago by the High Court here.

Judge Datuk Norcahaya Arshad said: “After considering all evidence adduced as provided by Section 182A(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code, the court found that the prosecution had successfully proved a case beyond reasonable doubt.

“The accused is found guilty as charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code and convicted and sentenced to death by hanging to the neck until death.”

Ling will be remanded in Kuching Prison pending appeal.

Ling was charged together with one Andrew Tiong King Guan under Section 109 and Section 302 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same code which provide for a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

One of the reasons the judge gave for convicting the accused was that the active communication between the accused and Tiong showed that they were more than just friends and customers.

She also said that the midnight SMS at 1.21am was not by the deceased but the accused herself as the unchallenged evidence of primary offender Ling Hoe Ing stated that he reached the deceased house between midnight and 1am.

She also said that Hoe Ing was told by Tiong that according to Ling, the back door was unlocked and the deceased would be sleeping on the mattress.

This is not by coincidence, someone in the house must have revealed the information in the house, she said.

She said the only person in the house was the accused herself.

She also said that there was no evidence to suggest that there was a problem with the water pump as there was no wet cloth of the deceased.

Thus, she said that there was no reason for the deceased to go to their backyard and forgot to lock the door.

Ling and Tiong were accused of the offence at a house in Ulu Sg Merah at about 1.30am on June 14, 2012.

The principal offender, Ling Hoe Ing, 28 , had been charged and convicted under an alternative charge under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Hoe Ing had pleaded guilty to the alternative charge and was sentenced to 16 years’ jail on Oct 1, 2013.

After Hoe Ing pleaded guilty, the court gave Tiong and Ling a discharge not amounting to an acquittal on their abetment charge, but the charge was reinstated in February 2015 after the prosecution filed an appeal to the Court of Appeal.

A warrant of arrest was then issued against Tiong after he failed to turn up in court when the charge was reinstated.

Tiong is currently still at large.

On June 12, Ling was ordered to enter her defence after the prosecution had successfully established a prima facie case against her.

She then opted to give sworn evidence in the witness box, in which her father Ling Kuo Song, 64, was also called to give testimony as a defence witness.

Ling was represented by counsels Roger Chin and Lim Heng Choo.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Fillany Siji prosecuted.

Yesterday, after the judgment, the deceased’s members said they were grateful for the conviction and now they hoped to proceed with child custody of Ling’s son who is now eight years old.

The boy is currently staying with Ling’s family in Kuching in which the deceased family members are allowed to visit him every Saturday.

According to the statement by the family members, the police are still looking for Tiong King Guan who is a wanted person at Interpol too.

Family members of the deceased have offered RM50,000 reward for those who could provide information leading to the arrest of Tiong.
