Reduce wastage through adherence of IBS, contractors told
KOTA KINABALU: The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) has called on local contractors to place emphasis on the four main components in the handling of construction projects in the state.
CIDB Technology Development Sector senior general manager Datuk Ir Elias Ismail said the four components were part of CIDB’s initiative to help the government progress and compete with other countries, through the Industrialized Building System (IBS), as it heads towards Vision 2020.
In a nutshell, the four components will focus on the importance of quality, the increase in productivity, the increase in efficiency and the establishment of environmentalfriendly projects.
“A recent research had shown that wastage of construction equipment, such as wood, excess concrete and even iron can accumulate up to five percent of the entire construction cost,” Elias said in his officiating speech at the IBS Bumiputra Contractors Seminar held at The Klagan Regency at 1Borneo on Tuesday.
In line with this, Elias stressed that such issues can be prevented if the contractors were to simply adhere to the four main components. Thus, it is vital for the contractors to employ the methods set out by IBS.
He added that the government had enforced the rule stating that every government project (such as schools or hospitals) must satisfy at least 70 percent of the IBS requirements.
He further mentioned that the government will also be enforcing the IBS methods on private institutions.
This is because private construction projects make up a majority of 80 percent of the total number of projects in the country, as compared to the governmentowned projects, which only make up to 20 percent.
Also present at the event was CIDB Sabah director Rosmen Ag Hassan.
