Man jailed for disposing of stolen gold rings
KOTA KINABALU: An unemployed man was jailed for 70 days by the Magistrate’s Courts here for two counts of disposing two stolen gold rings belonging to a woman.
Efieyezwanshah Abin, 20, received the custodial sentences after he pleaded guilty to both the charges yesterday.
His two cases were heard before magistrates Cindy Mc Juce Balitus and Afiq Agoes, respectively.
Each of the charges was framed under Section 414 of the Penal Code which is punishable by a jail term of up to seven years or a fine or both, upon conviction.
On the first to the second charges, the accused was sentenced to 30 days’ and 40 days’ jail, respectively for disposing of the jewellery of the 51-year-old woman at two separate shops in Kg Air, here and both transactions were carried out on August 14.
The court also ordered for the custodial sentences to be served concurrently which means the accused will only serve the highest jail term of 40 days.
Apart from that, the accused was ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his jail terms for further action.
In an unrelated case, a man was fined RM1,000, in default, five months’ jail for illegally assisting in running a four-digit (4D) lottery.
Chin Yaw Yin, 32, admitted before Afiq to committing the offence at a grocery shop in Putatan on March 15.
He was convicted under Section 9 (1) of the Common Gaming Housing Act 1953, which provides for a maximum fine of RM5,000, or a jail term of up to six months or both, upon conviction.
Inspectors Albert Basiri and Mohd Rasydan Jasni prosecuted.
