Man jailed for disposing of stolen gold rings

KOTA KINABALU: An unemployed man was jailed for 70 days by the Magistrate’s Courts here for two counts of disposing two stolen gold rings belonging to a woman.

Efieyezwan­shah Abin, 20, received the custodial sentences after he pleaded guilty to both the charges yesterday.

His two cases were heard before magistrate­s Cindy Mc Juce Balitus and Afiq Agoes, respective­ly.

Each of the charges was framed under Section 414 of the Penal Code which is punishable by a jail term of up to seven years or a fine or both, upon conviction.

On the first to the second charges, the accused was sentenced to 30 days’ and 40 days’ jail, respective­ly for disposing of the jewellery of the 51-year-old woman at two separate shops in Kg Air, here and both transactio­ns were carried out on August 14.

The court also ordered for the custodial sentences to be served concurrent­ly which means the accused will only serve the highest jail term of 40 days.

Apart from that, the accused was ordered to be referred to the Immigratio­n Department after serving his jail terms for further action.

In an unrelated case, a man was fined RM1,000, in default, five months’ jail for illegally assisting in running a four-digit (4D) lottery.

Chin Yaw Yin, 32, admitted before Afiq to committing the offence at a grocery shop in Putatan on March 15.

He was convicted under Section 9 (1) of the Common Gaming Housing Act 1953, which provides for a maximum fine of RM5,000, or a jail term of up to six months or both, upon conviction.

Inspectors Albert Basiri and Mohd Rasydan Jasni prosecuted.
