Kota Kinabalu take on Beaufort for Tan Sri Musa Aman Cup

- By Arfandi Jaafar

KOTA KINABALU: It will be a final between two underdogs at the 5th Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman Cup Inter-District Football Tournament, tomorrow.

Kota Kinabalu and Beaufort created surprises when they emerged as winners in their semifinal matches here, yesterday.

Kota Kinabalu made it to the final first when they beat 2014 champion-of-champions winner and 2016 runners-up, Tawau, 3-2, at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah Stadium.

The matches kicked off at 3.30pm and as expected both were exciting and thrilling.

However, the match between Beaufort and Keningau ended much later. The game at the Likas Stadium eventually went into penalties when both sides remained scoreless after regulation time and extra time.

Beaufort eventually took the win 5-3.

They won the coin toss and were first to take the spot. They converted all their penalties while Keningau stumbled in their first attempt.

Meanwhile, over at the UMS Stadium, Kota Kinabalu took the early lead thanks to Mohd Faqrurazi Ahmad's third minute strike.

But Tawau did not wait long to stem the tide through Mohd Noor Patuan ten minutes later. The score remained unchanged until the break.

Later, the tables turned when Sahran Sahar scored in the 59th minute. But Tawau's joy was shortlived as Yuseddy Yusiman put Kota Kinabalu back into the game in the 63rd minute.

Later Mohd Syahmil Nizam Ikhbal made it count in the 73rd minute for his side to seal the win.

The final is scheduled to be held at the Likas Stadium here at 3pm (Sunday), while the third and fourth place play-off between Keningau and Tawau will be played at the Penampang Stadium in the morning.

The final will be a second meeting between Kota Kinabalu and Beaufort. Both sides met earlier in the group stage, where Kota Kinabalu edged Beaufort 10.
