SANDAKAN: Royal Malaysian Air Force’s (RMAF) MIG-29 aircraft pilot Major Patricia Yap Syau Yin, as a Negaraku Icon, has outlined four key traits which helped and motivated her to achieve success.

Yap, 41, who is a native of this district said the four traits were discipline, working in groups, leadership and high determination.

“As a Negaraku Icon, I am proud to be selected to share my keys to success, and to inspire the society, especially the younger generation,” she told Bernama here yesterday.

On Sunday, Yap was invited as a guest in the 2050 National Transformation (TN50) dialogue session here which was attended by about 1,000 students, youths and civilians from the Sandakan, Beluran, Kinabatangan, Kunak, Lahad Datu and Semporna districts.

She also reminded the younger generation not to give up on pursuing their dreams and aspirations, as well as to do their best for the nation and country.

In the meantime, Yap said it had been two years since she returned to Sandakan, and she saw many changes, especially in terms of development.

She was also proud of the friendly nature of the Sandakan community, which was still intact, irrespective of age and religion.

Yap added that her hometown was always close to her heart, and she wanted to see the district move forward in terms of development and people’s success.

She has served in the RMAF for 20 years, and was an active war aircraft pilot for five years from 2003 to 2007, before being assigned as a trainer for the Pilatus PC-7 MKII aircraft at the Alor Setar Air Force College in Kedah. Last September, the mother of two received the ‘Anugerah Wanita Cemerlang’ (Outstanding Woman Award) from the Sabah state government in conjunction with the Sabah state-level Women’s Day.
