- By Arfandi Jaafar

KOTA KINABALU: Veteran clubs and teams in Sabah and Labuan are invited to join the 7th Sabah Unity Football League tournament, which will be happening at the Penampang Sports Complex near here next year.

The tournament is being organised by the Penampang Unity Football Club and event coordinator Edwin Jomiji revealed that the competition will begin in January.

“There will be two categories, namely Mix Veteran and Super Veteran. The MixVet is for players who are 40 and above, while the SuperVet is for players 50 and above,” he said when contacted here yesterday.

According to Edwin, the annual tournament was first introduced in 2010 with the aim of promoting unity and integration among clubs and teams and players. Subsequent editions helped the tournament to gain more popularity with the participation of various sports bodies, government organisations and football fans in the state.

Since then, the tournament’s objective focused on promoting closer rapport among participants. It also encourages the public to lead healthy lifestyles through football and other sports.

And as always, the tournament offers attractive cash prizes up for grabs, including medals and trophies.

“For this edition, we are giving away more than RM50,000 in cash and prizes,” Edwin said, while encouraging clubs and teams to register early to avoid disappointment.

“This time, we have decided to limit the number of entries to 32 in the MixVet and only 20 teams in the SuperVet category,” Edwin added.

He said the tournament will be played based on the World Cup format with slight modifications depending on circumstances.

Those who are interested to join but have yet to confirm their registration are urged to submit their entries by November 30. There will be a team managers’ meeting in the first week of December and all team managers are required to attend.

For registration and more information please contact Edwin (010-870 2988), Carfester Mokujin (016-804 9030) or Benjamin (017-889 6075).
